abstract = "This study is an initiative for evaluating terrain, rainfall and
fire data for characterizing a region with a complex pattern of
fire dynamics and seasonal floods in central Brazil. For achieving
this objective, we used hot pixels and burned area products,
derived from MODIS sensor, rainfall, derived from the Tropical
Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite and the digital
elevation model, derived from Aster sensor, onboard Terra
platform. For this initial work, we selected the Formoso do
Araguaia municipality, located in the Tocantins state. Our results
showed that high fire activities and fire recurrence are observed
in the lowest areas in terms of elevation and also closer to the
drainage systems. It is interesting to note that these areas, in
our study site, refer to integral protection and sustainable use
conservation areas, and thus fire is not allowed by law.
Approximately 60% of the study area burned and more than 50% of
the areas that burned presented a fire recurrence. Fire occurrence
increases exponentially when rainfall is lower than 100 mm. The
development of this research aims to expand these analyses for a
large area, encompassing the Araguaia river floodplain. In order
to achieve an operational monitoring system, collaboration with
local environmental agencies and civil defense will be
                         established.",
